Our featured artist for The Heart of the Community show from Sep 7 - Nov 1, 2025 is Maria Pezzano.
Maria is a mixed media artist based in Ontario. Her work is full of colour and whimsy. She loves working with layers, incorporating specialty handmade papers, such as Nepalese, Japanese, Shodo Daigaku papers, tissue papers, lino prints from her hand-carved lino blocks, gelli prints, and her own digitally designed, printed patterns. From Maria:
“While I was growing up, my mother was a seamstresss and my father trained as a master tailor. Throughout my whole life I was enchanted and drawn towards patterns. Over forty years in this industry, I still am in love with patterns and pattern making. I incorporate patterns into my art. Now my art is pattern. My patterns are my art.
The primary inspiration is MELIORISM
(noun) melya, rizam the belief that we can
contribute to positive change and improve the world through acts of love, creativity, compassion, and kindness.. which is fueled by my new studio at 163 Alice St. Guelph. Studio visits are encouraged by appointment.”
